Ernesto León
Since 1991, Ernesto Leon has used gilding in his art works, in order
to symbolize atmospheres; such as the representations of drought. This
work was made with fire - the pictorial technique was trastocada -, color
was not placed on the supporting wood panels, but rather, fire destroyed
the surface and gave way to the underlying colors, or burned through to
offer a rich black.
Ernesto Leon has approached painting through the influence of Latin American
colonial objects, be it by highlighting subject matter such as droughts
or dealing with rituals such as votive offerings. He has also approached
religious architecture by means of a project denominated as "Viacrucis,"
consisting of images brought down from catholic churches and developed
in more authentic and daily possibilities. His style is classical, yet
juxtaposed with modern themes and concerns.
