Gloria Fiallo
Gloria Fiallo's work presents a juxtaposition of themes and dichotomies,
be it the profane versus the religious, pleasure versus pain, and so on,
forcing the viewer to review what is often taken for granted, to question
that which is thought to be right or wrong.
Her work most often consists of repetitive images, photographic appropriations
or copies having a decorative and superficial feel, yet so strong when
considered thoughtfully that they draw you in and invite you to explore
deeper meanings and depths, to reinterpret dogmas and question beliefs.
She often contradicts images that are religious by placing them against
sexually explicit images, each signifying or symbolizing a different type
of "ecstasy," that when placed side by side looks frighteningly
parallel. Her shock value is more than shock. It, like her work, transcends
the image at hand and invites to inner polemics.
