Juan Si (1960)

Juan Si (Juan Gonzalez), is part of Cuba's Generation of the Eighties or "Generacion de los Ochenta."

He graduated from the renowned art school of San Alejandro in Havana and proceeded to make his presence felt throughout the city by using every medium available to him, including his own body, in paintings, drawings, photographs, happenings and performances. He was a founding member of "Arte Calle," a Cuban artistic movement that graced the streets and often invited controversy for its openness in criticizing the communist regime.

As many artists from his generation, he moved the United States, where he has continued to live and work. During his stay in Florida, he participated in various exhibitions, including Art Miami, where during several years he had important installations such as "El Arte Alimenta" or "Art is Nourishing," and an assembly of digital media depicting the "balceros" plight in trying to reach democratic land.

Juan Si's art is engaging, challenging and subtly irreverent. He has had articles in major international magazines and newspaper, "Art Nexus," "The Miami Herald," and "Art Forum," among others. His work is in major private and corporate collections, as well as the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Florida.
