Verónica Riedel
The richly textured mixed media works of Guatemalan artist Veronica
Riedel make reference to the journeys of life like visual poems replete
with the rhythmic cadences of signs and symbols.
Some of her paintings have writings, some legible, some not, and others
have markings that conjure things at different stages between being and
non-being.
The objects she describes may be obvious references to that journey ?
boats, canoes, clocks, trembling leaves, and seeds eager for regeneration.
The textures represent the earth, the tangible; geometric figures signify
values, the intangible. All exist as symbols of the passage through life
that everyone encounters as they strive toward an ultimate objective or
goal and their own hopes and aspirations. For many that is heaven or a
higher spiritual existence; for others it is less perceptible.
The journey requires preparation that is as spiritual as it is physical
and the search for balance is what informs Riedel's work.
The signs and symbols that appear in Veronica Riedel's paintings, and
indeed in the works of many artists throughout history, allow the viewer
to go much further than words do in approaching the more mystical and
ephemeral aspects of life. Painting acts as a verbal language to capture
the primal stages of thought and in the roughly textured surfaces of Riedel's
works, markings refer to the most primitive of human impulses. Dominated
by earth tones to enhance the relationship to the phenomena of nature,
each delivers a message about life.
At the same time, their rudimentary directness, coupled with the almost
banal objects that share each composition, have a non-art effect that
disguises the sophistication of technique and eloquence of message that
are intrinsic to each image. The seemingly accidental configurations of
collaged surfaces resembling assemblages of pebbles, sticks, ropes, glyphs,
and prehistoric markings are actually carefully composed to inspire the
viewer to contemplate a personal value system as it affects the choices
one makes through the journey of life.
